Dr. Theocharis Baxevanis visited the Research group for Materials Science and Engineering at Ruhr-University Bochum in January 2012. Dr. Eggeler’s group is recognized internationally for research involving new biomaterials, materials for micro devices and functional materials (especially Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs)). The purpose of the visit was to explore the possibility of a future collaboration regarding research on the fracture and fatigue properties of SMAs. Dr. Baxevanis has been recently working on the analytical and computational analysis of the fracture toughness enhancement associated with phase transformation in SMAs, a topic in which Dr. Eggeler’s group has contributed with several experimental studies on the macroscale. A possible future collaboration topic identified was the study of measurable and controllable features of SMAs’ microstructure related to its fracture resistance to provide a basis for designing more fracture and fatigue resistant material systems.
